Dear Marvel,
Please, for just a few months, maybe even half a year (I know a full 12 months would be too much to ask), no more events. No more “game-changers”, no more “world-rockers”, no more “Internet-breakers.”
Can we have some character development please? Something outside having to deal with “epic fallout” and “consequences that will forever alter the Marvel Universe.”
I’d like to see characters I’ve followed for a quarter of a century be allowed room to breathe. Let them grow outside of massive conflict. You don’t need to always destroy nor do you need to always crossover.
I fear that good, creative writing is being lost under the need to make money. Quantity overtook quality a long time ago.
In my opinion there is more character development on the role play message boards, Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook than in the comics.
There are some excellent players/writers out there by the way. You should check them out.
I think, when all is said and done, you’ve forgotten why we love superheroes. They are ordinary people with extraordinary abilities. These days there’s no focus on the parts that make them just like us, the parts where we can identify with the trouble our heroes face.
Stark’s battle with the bottle, Parker’s struggle to juggle dual lives, the X-Men trying to fit into a world that hates them and Murdock’s balancing on both sides of the law have been replaced by the “next big catastrophe.”
Right now we have the tail end of Fear Itself (which is going to lead to another event), Schism leading to Regenesis and at least eight x-books(!!) and Spider-Island. Coming up there’s Cable’s return, Point One and now images of the Phoenix doing the rounds.
It’s too much.
Please, no more events. Go back to basics. Remind me why I fell in love with your characters in the first place.
Thanks.
